The sorceresses are some of the most elite troops the Reds have, and they're trained extensively in hand-to-hand combat. But the truth is that there's a reason that each sorceress is assigned a guardsman: most of them are okay fighters, but not great.
Even a guardsman would have trouble fighting someone as strong and fast as Mel is, and the sorceress is going to be hard pressed to hold Mel off for more than a second or two. Which doesn't mean she's not going to try.
