A time to remember

The air is crisp without being cold, the sun is bright without being hot, and the grass is greener than it ever was back home. But somehow... somehow this seems like the perfect place to remember papa. The perfect place to love his memory and let it go.

She looks around her. Friends. Family, in a way. She has lost much, but she has gained much.

And she is not alone.

Rachel's hand is always welcome, and Makita reaches out to brush her fingers across the too-warm skin of it. She manages a tiny, pained, grateful smile.

Makita is silent, even in her mind, but at Rachel's words images flash through her mind. Her father in all the ways she'd known him: smiling, laughing, stern, kind, dangerous...

Rachel smiled, warm and gentle as she laid the girl's hand upon the slender trunk. She'd serve as a language bridge between the green life and the human...

And they sank...

Past bark and leaf, through water that ran like blood and the individual sameness of cells. Until all was green and slow, cool and alive...

...that was where the images Makita sent fell, like rocks into a pond, creating sympathetic, curious ripples...
