The universe is sometimes capricious
Aug. 6th, 2007 05:48 amMakita leads her team through the door and there is an audible click as the latch catches. Then something odd happens: the door swings open again and there is a pull and then the door stands closed once more.
Four people find themselves in an apartment building. The wind howls in through the window, and judging by the snow and debris scattered across the floor the glass holding the elements at bay shattered months ago. It's clear that no one has lived in this room in quite a while, but it appears that has at least been here recently.
In one corner, on top of the bed where it won't get wet from melting snow, there sits a neatly ordered stack of equipment. Rifles, pistols, grenades, boxes of ammunition, an unopened case of ration bars, boots and heavy winter coats in various sizes and styles, and stylized fur hats with gleaming red enameled stars in the center.
A look out the window would reveal six figures moving quickly through the snow.
Welcome to Bahamut.

She gives him a bracing look, and then turns away, determined to do her best to get them all out of there alive, even if she wasn't the one in charge.

Date: 2007-08-17 01:48 pm (UTC)The snow is thick on the ground, and the wind cuts through any open gap in clothing. Visibility is terrible, and any tracks that the first group might have left have been erased while everyone got ready to move out. Still, they were moving in something approximating a straight line earlier...

Date: 2007-08-17 05:18 pm (UTC)"I can't see anything!"
She shouts it, so they can all hear. Her eyes are tearing against the wind, making things seem to swim before them.
"Allie says they are straight ahead, so I say we go straight!"
The kid's got powers! Who is she to argue with that?

He feels the snow seep into his inadequate shoes, and curses himself for not finding better footwear.

In her head, she is cursing the wind, and praying steadily at the same time. She wishes she was stronger, so she could at least carry Allie, and try to protect her from some of this weather.

Alex seems to be bearing up well under the pressure, but that doesn't make her worry about him less.
The only one she isn't overly worried about is Cait, but if they lose her for any reason, they're sunk.
"Too bad none of us can fly."
She says it under her breath, and doesn't expect anyone to hear her.

Every so often the visibility gets good enough that flickering blue lights can be seen moving among the buildings in the distance.

Date: 2007-08-26 11:42 pm (UTC)"She can't be sure it's them." Allie said looking up, as she tugged Rapunzel to keep going in that direction if closer to cover. "It's a war zone. There are a lot of people here."
This last part is said as though the number is somehow a tiring factor.

Date: 2007-08-27 03:20 am (UTC)And she really wants to kick Cait's ass for abandoning them without making sure they had cover, first.
"Get up against this building, and look for any entrance!"
She half shoves Allie between herself and Alex, and simply takes the rifle from him. She checks to make sure it's loaded and nods in satisfaction before making sure the safety is on, but it is otherwise ready to be fired. It's been decades since she'd been shown how, and he didn't really have practical knowledge, but it was the best they had. She hands it back to Alex, pointing to the safety switch.
"Flip that, point and pull the trigger."
And pray. She keeps trudging through deep snow and biting wind, toward what she thinks is a hole in the wall of the building they're closest to.
"Allie, how are you doing? You're not getting frostbite, are you?"
